Stefan studied at the Pratt Institute in New York, where he had earned a Fulbright Scholarship, and it is here that he began his career as a graphic designer. His first project was when his girlfriend asked him to design her business cards for a dollar each; Sagmeister printed the cards on dollar bills. His eccentric approaches such as the business cards have spanned through the history of his career, such as a poster he designed early in his career for an advertising agency in Hong Kong which he included the backsides of nude Cantonese men. The poster was banned in many countries. He once even used self mutilation to carve an ad onto his body for an AIGA lecture.
Sagmeister's latest venture was a series of typographic billboards featuring words creatively placed throughout nature and in other unexpected places.
